Sandfontein’s serene nature reserve holds historical significance as the site of the Battle of Sandfontein in 1914. Along the nearby road from Ramansdrift to Warmbad, the Norechab Battle of 1905/1906 also took place.
The Battle of Sandfontein, a pivotal conflict in Namibia’s history during WWI, saw British and South African forces clash with a larger German army over control of Sandfontein's strategic location and valuable water wells. During the colonial era, the Nama faced upheaval as Germans encroached on their land, leading to conflicts like the 1905/1906 Norechab Battle. In a night raid, 200 Nama fighters were met by prepared German forces, who, with reinforcements, defended using a cannon and machine guns. The battle lasted several hours, with five Germans killed and seven wounded, while Nama casualties remain unknown.
On historical tours led by Sandfontein's knowledgeable guides, guests can explore the German graveyard, the Norechab graveyard, and other historical sites marking these battles. To honour both indigenous and South African soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of Sandfontein, a memorial will be erected, providing a meaningful connection to the area’s past.
