“Our relationship with the wilderness is not just about preserving it for future generations but also about healing ourselves in the process.”
~ Dr Ian McCallum
Hugging the banks of the Orange River, the Sandfontein Nature Reserve covers a vast swathe of ecologically important land that remains largely untouched. Conservation and environmental stewardship are crucial for us in safeguarding this pristine wilderness. The reserve is larger than the island of Singapore, and the number of animals roaming the terrain far exceeds the number of guests at Sandfontein, with a ratio of more than 300 to one.
Verified by Quiet Parks International, Sandfontein is certified as a Quiet Stay and has been evaluated by QPI Field Recordists and was found to meet the QPI Assessment Criteria. To maintain the reserve’s serene silence, the entire operation is powered by solar energy.
Over the years, Sandfontein has expanded the reserve’s boundaries, reintroduced various species. Locally sourced materials were used in the construction of its eco-friendly Lodge, Suites, and Villa and organic fruits and vegetables are grown in our gardens along the Orange River, providing the lodge and its staff with fresh, locally sourced food.
Sandfontein is an invitation to find yourself, in the middle of nowhere. To hear yourself, in total silence.
By staying with us, you are directly contributing to the continued conservation of this wild land and all the species that call it home. We invite you to join us and experience the magic of Sandfontein – where we honour and celebrate our interconnectedness with nature and one another.
