Flora and Fauna

At Sandfontein, our skilled trackers possess an exceptional understanding of the local wildlife and their behaviours, guiding guests directly to areas where sightings are most promising. They also have extensive knowledge of the area's unique flora, including the resilient milk bush and the rare, striking quiver tree.

The region has long been home to a diverse array of fauna and flora and is enriched by a 25km stretch of the Orange River. This thriving riverine environment supports a healthy population of wetland birds, including species such as the black-headed heron, pied kingfisher, and African jacana, and among its unique flora, guests may encounter the rare leaf-succulent Portulacaria armiana. Such environments are crucial for conservation efforts and offer great opportunities for birdwatching and botanical exploration.
